New Year – New Habits? Beginning a Compost
Posted on January 17, 2012
Happy New Year! I hope everybody is enjoying their fresh start to the year. SO, I just enjoyed a couple of days at the PPA (Professional Photographer Association) Convention in my backyard of New Orleans. I think I literally stretched my brain to the LIMIT. But on the ride home last night ALONE (which I never get to do, because I am usually alone for 10 minutes MAX a day, if you know what I mean working moms), I was thinking…I really enjoyed today, by myself, among 10,000 strangers, learning about what I love to do. After saying my thanks to the big man, I thought how can I continue to GROW? How can I continue to make myself stronger? Smarter? EVERYBODY should step out of their comfort zone, so I decided I am going to turn my BROWN thumb into a GREEN ONE.
My Brown Thumb
The only plant I have had in my life, sat on my cubicle office desk at a previous job for a couple of years. I didn’t have a really close relationship with this plant. I didn’t name it nor did I water it. The plant was taken care of by the “Plant Lady” that visited bi-monthly. However, it did sit on my desk and I use to pour my left over coffee in it SOMETIMES. The “Plant Lady” even swapped it out while I wasn’t looking, because some bugs started flying around it. Maybe they were coffee bugs, maybe it was because it was too wet. I don’t know why the bugs liked my plant for their home, but they were living there. The plant and I parted ways when I moved on from that job.
Every other plant I have ever had has DIED. I have a graveyard of empty green plastic flower pots. They look sad. I can hear them saying…”Mindy! We are empty, PLEASE fulfill our potential.”
Maybe I hate gardening because one of my chores when I was younger was pulling the weeds in the rock garden surrounding the pool at my mom and dad’s house. Did I mention the rock garden was FULL of CACTI? My dad loves every form of cactus. So most of my Saturday’s were spent bent over, dripping with sweat, pulling weeds out from in between prickly, poking cacti. Every day of pulling weeds was followed with a date with the tweezers pulling cactus spines out of my hands. FUN? NO!!
There is no maybe about it, THOSE SPINES are exactly why I have not planted ONE plant around my house. It’s sad, because I want it to be beautifully landscaped. So I need to get started to change the greenery around this joint.
First Step
I am going to start a compost first. I found these helpful articles on Planet Green Discovery Website that you might find helpful too if you want to get started too.
Surprising items you SHOULD compost:
http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/surprising-compost-items.html
Things to AVOID Composting:
http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/compost-avoid-items-bin.html
So a NEW HABIT must begin. Every item I put something in the trash, I need to ask myself…Is this organic? Can it go back to the earth? It’s probably a good idea if I print the lists on the links above for quick reference.
I put a bucket next to my sink to gather our scraps, but after reading this list I think I need a trash can to collect all of these items. Maybe I just need a bowl for the stuff that SHOULD NOT be compost. My next step is getting started on an area in the yard to start a pile. More research in my future…I can see it.
This should be interesting. Now that I have blogged about it, I have to do it! Thanks for reading you guys.
xoxo, Mindy

1st Birth Session Experience
Posted on April 20, 2011
My 1st birth session experience…was a great one. I was challenged and pushed to the extreme emotionally and physically. For the first time, I cried looking through my viewfinder at a grandmother gazing upon the sweet face of her first grandchild. Oh what a beautiful moment, to be a part of and be intimate with the whole process. A BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRL was born yesterday, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome her surrounded by a great and supportive family. Baby Brynn is so lucky to have SOOO many people who love her unconditionally. She even has a Grandpa named Paw Paw Fun, how cool is that?!?
